The Universal Thread makes use of extensive stylesheets, javascript and other related technologies to offer you an interface which allows full flexibility of using the support area. This document describes some technical guidelines in regards to that.

Browsers supported

The Universal Thread support area has been tested with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Although other browsers are not officially supported, individual users have found the Universal Thread to work, without major problems, with Netscape 6.x, Opera 7.x, Mozilla 1.6 or newer and Mozilla Firefox 0.9 or newer.

Base resolution

The base resolution of the Universal Thread is at 1024*768.

Cache issues

We have found that most of the problems reported are being related to cache issues. At first, we suggest you reload the page with F5. If this doesn't work, clear the browser cache and restart the browser.

Opening new windows

This applies to users using AdSubtract, Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, Spysubtract and MSN Messenger 6.2, as well as built-in popup blockers in some browsers.

Users using AdSubtract may experience technical difficulties when accessing some functionalities. Some users reported that it was causing a problem when activated. Adjustements could be made in order to fix the problem. See AddSubtract instructions for such a need.

Users using Norton Internet Security should make sure to deactivate "Turn on Window Popup Blocking" from "Ad Blocking" in order to work successfully with the Universal Thread. This utility uses that terminology considering that every new window is in regards to ad advertising and this is really not the case on the Universal Thread as we use them for pick list, account setup and other related purposes.

Users using MSN Messenger 6.2 might have selected the option to include the MSN Toolbar in Internet Explorer. If that has been installed using the Pop-Up Blocker, you would need to setup that option to make sure the Universal Thread can work with it. To do that, click on down arrow to select "Pop-Up Guard Settings", click on the "Allow List" tab and enter universalthread.com, utmag.com and levelextreme.com in the list.

The Universal Thread is opening new windows at various locations for pick lists and related purposes. Such utilities are considering the opening of a new window to be advertisement. This is totally not the case on the Universal Thread. If you have this turn on, you will have to create a filter to accept the ones from the Universal Thread, if you really wish to keep it on.

Login does not work

Users who upgraded to IE 6 may experience technical difficulties when doing the Universal Thread login. If the installation enabled the list of trusted sites, you may have to enter Universal Thread in it.

It has been reported that Anonymizer 2005 could cause problems during the login. To adjust the situation, simply set Anonymous Browsing Off for the Universal Thread site.

Users using a Content Server

One user has reported being unable to log in to the Universal Thread from the main page where a content server was in place. We later discovered that the corporate administrators have disabled access to any site using a ~ character in a process. If you experience that situation, you may adjust it in the content server. You may open the door for the Universal Thread site.

Graphic display

We got a report that users using specific video card/driver may experience some graphic display problems when resizing the frame in the messages area. This results in a trace which remains on the screen when doing so.

The following video card/driver have been identified:
  • Matrox Millenium G400/G450, Driver version 5.72.21.0, running on Windows 2000
You may look for updated drivers for potential fix to this problem.

Internet Explorer Privacy

If you set the Internet Explorer Privacy option to High, you might have some problems with the Universal Thread site. For an unknown reason, when being set to High, this would cause a "'parent.FRAMERMENU' is null or not an object" javascript error when logging into the messages area. Having it set to Medium shouldn't cause this behavior.

Internet Explorer security

Some users have experienced difficulties receiving proper content in the messages area frame section when working with Internet Explorer security set to high. Setting it to Medium resolved the issue.

Resizing of windows with Javascript

The Universal Thread makes intensive use of pick list windows and related options which have the need to open a new window and resize it. If you disable that ability, you won't be able to work ok with the Universal Thread.

Users using Internet Explorer may experience difficulties after having made an upgrade. They might have seen their security setting in Internet Options/Security/Custom Level/Miscellaneous/Allow script-initiated Windows without size or position constraints to be changed to Disable. That should be set to Enable.

Users using PopThis need to assure that the Options panel "Prevent Javascript resizing" setting should remain uncheck.
